Fred & Sue Stefanik posted a condolence
Wednesday, December 26, 2012
I knew Tony and his brother Frank since I was a young boy because my father Stanley (Fritz)knew them well as both neighbors and card players. Yes, Tony was a barn builder, but he was also a home builder.
My wife Sue and I were planning our wedding and decided to build our house on some land my parents had given us. I worked for a home builder while I was in high school so I had some carpentry skills, and some money, but not enough of either to build our home. We decided on the house design and showed it to dad. He said "Let's go see Tony." We jumped in the car and were at Punkin Hook Farm in about 5 minutes. I asked Tony if he would help build our home. He thought for a moment and said he had already committed to building a barn addition that spring, and that he didn't do much house building, but if I agreed to help he would give it a try. That was 1978.
We started construction on my birthday, April 26. Of course Tony brought his carpentry partner Harold McMullen, and between Tony, Harold, Dad and I, (mostly Tony and Harold) we built a beautiful cozy home. I have many fond memories of that summer. Tony was a hardworking son of a gun, and very humble too. We would go next door to my mother's every day at noon and she would serve the crew a hearty lunch. Tony had a big appetite and he wasn't used to home cooking so he really dug in. He would also bring bring fresh caught trout from the West Branch of the Mohawk that mom would cook for lunch. When it came time for me to pay for his services he deducted a substantial amount and said that was our wedding present. For a young married couple that was very much appreciated.
In 1991 we bought a farm in Verona. The barn needed some repairs so once again dad and I drove over to Punkin Hook. I asked Tony if he was ready to come back to work for me. He was, and this time he was more comfortable with barn building as opposed to house building. He told me he had never seen a barn with so many broken doors, but he fixed them all. Our twin boys were ten years old at that time. They loved watching that big man work. I remembered how Tony enjoyed the lunches that mom made for him, so my wife did the same. We always had sliced tomatoes from the garden to go with the main dish because he relished in them. That is one of the memories that stuck with my boys, is how much Tony loved those tomatoes, and how big his hands were when he reached for another slice. He was a humble, hardworking neighbor, as honest as his hands were big. The world needs more just like him.
