Obituary of David A. Engelbert
David A. Engelbert, age 77, of Rome, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021, with his loving family at his side.
He was born June 29, 1943, in Rome, a son of the late Clarence M. and Arlene Zingerline Engelbert. He graduated from Rome Free Academy (1961) and Hartwick College (1966). David was united in marriage to the former Martha “Muff” Fowler, on April 17, 1971, in Lowville.
David was the third-generation owner, along with his brother Bruce, of Engelbert’s Jewelers until his retirement in 2010. He was incredibly proud of his daughter, Sarah, who joined Engelbert’s as the fourth-generation owner. In retirement David continued his love of travelling with Muff and spending time with his five grandchildren on Lake Delta and at Woods Valley. He proudly served on the board of the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rome Community Foundation. In 2019, David was recognized as a founding member of the Rome Community Foundation.
David is survived by his wife, Muff; children, Mark and Maureen Engelbert of Rome, and Sarah and Mark Rushton of Rome; a brother and sister in law, Bruce and Kay Engelbert of Rome; and his cherished grandchildren, Grace, Cooper, Grady, Jack and Ethan.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 11:00 am, at the First Presbyterian Church of Rome. A private family burial will be in Rome Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Friday April 23, 2021, from 4 to 7 PM. Please wear a mask, social distance and adhere to Covid-19 guidelines.
