Obituary of Debra L. McBurney
Debra McBurney of Rome, passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at home, at the age of 63.
She was born in Albany, NY on April 5, 1958, before moving back to Rome with her parents in 1967. Debbie was the cherished daughter of the late James and Loretta (Hawkins) McBurney, and is survived by her brothers, Steve McBurney and his wife Cheri, and her brother, Jim McBurney. Also, she is survived by a very special uncle, Ken McBurney, who was an amazing caretaker for Deb and was very involved in every aspect of her life. Uncle Kenny was holding Deb’s hand when she passed. Deb is also survived by her special friend, Robin Haggerty and many cousins and friends.
Deb moved into the W. Thomas St IRA (UCP) in July of 2009. There she made many friends and special relationships. The family would like to thank all the staff at UCP that helped to support Deb through the years. She had many visitors through the years at the IRA, friends and family and attended Gore Road day-hab services where she met her very special friend, George LaRock.
Debbie always had a beautiful smile and a warm comforting disposition. Her kindness and genuine interest for others inspired many people. Deb never complained about her life and was blessed with two of the best parents anyone could have asked for, Jimmy and Loretta.
Deb enjoyed family visits at the IRA and at her family’s homes, and loved the holidays and spending time with family and friends. Deb shared very special relationships with the staff and her peers at the W. Thomas IRA. Deb was a happy and loving person even in the final moments of her life. During her life Deb enjoyed playing the piano, participated in Stageworks several times as well as being a part of the St. Peter’s Choir and she loved to talk on the telephone and make sure that everyone in her life was doing ok.
Deb enjoyed singing, dancing, coloring, reading the newspaper and reading various books to her peers. She loved to take part in BINGO games and other board games as well. She loved to make arts and crafts and always greeted each person that walked through the doors of W. Thomas St by asking if they were going to stay all day and telling them she loved them.
Deb will be remembered by all those that were blessed to have her in their life. She made everyone’s life better. Her vivacious personality and soft heart will always be a part of the W. Thomas St. IRA.
