I believe that each of us can look back on our lives and recall just a handful of people with whom we crossed paths when we were young, who end up having an immense impact upon the values and traits we hold dear and the kind of person we eventually become. Coach Myz was unwittingly one of these incredible mentors for me.
Playing line at RFA for him throughout my high school career in the mid-70’s, Coach Myz taught me more about myself than he’ll ever know. He had that magic gift of knowing when to push you harder than you thought you could ever go … and equally knowing when to quietly pull you aside, acknowledge your doubts, and reassure you that you can do it better next time.
His booming voice was legendary, but we all came to know that his heart was even bigger. He could at times be incredibly intimidating, but he helped me discover things about myself that I didn’t know I was capable of. And I’ll always love him for it.
God bless Coach Myz ...

I have very vivid memories of Coach "MYZ" while I competed in indoor and outdoor track with Tom Jr. from '84 to '87. He pushed me in the weight room and told me I could do better in my races. I was able to push myself more because I didn't want to disappoint him. I clearly remember him yelling at me during one of my races, and I heard his booming voice even though he was at the shot put area so far away! I will also never forget a cold snowy day in January when he sent us on a run from RFA to Strough to run inside the school; We cut the run short because of the weather and met him there. It was a mistake, he knew right away that we got there to fast and he yelled at us for not wanting to work hard. We felt so bad we went back outside and ran twice as far. He was a great Coach and person; and the work ethic he demanded helped me in college and beyond and I tried to instill that in my sons. My condolences to the family.

Many fond memories of “Coach Myz” came flooding back to me a few weeks ago. Like when “Mrs Myz” brought us ice cream to our football practice and when toddler “Myz Jr” visited our wrestling practice.
Then, a couple of days ago, I was saddened to be told of his passing. Coach Myz was a powerful athlete and an awesome coach, but he was also humble, honest, caring and wise. I feel blessed to have known this incredible coach and inspirational person.
With love,

Although it's been almost 48 years since I last suited up for a game for Coach Myz, I still revere the man. I played football for Myz for 4 years between JV and varsity and had a chance to see all aspects of his coaching style. He was one of the few coaches who would change his approach to a player depending on how he read that player and what would motivate that player best. He could be in your face screaming at you for some infraction or put his arm around you and take you aside and explain something to you...he just seemed to know exactly what you needed at a particular time. I know a lot of coaches that only have one style, which ultimately results in some players not getting what they need to succeed. Not Coach Myz. I, for one, learned a lot from Coach. I wish I paid a little more attention to his words of wisdom but in the long run, his influence was not lost on this old tight end and I'll carry the lessons learned from him on the field forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with Debbie and the family in your loss.

Deepest condolences to Debbie and family, and to all of Rome, NY on the loss of a truly wonderful man.
Like most RFA athletes who were a few years younger than Tom, I marveled at his work ethic and abilities. I still have images of Tom and Frank Peraino flying up the rope climb in seconds while it took minutes for the others!
But I didn’t get to know Tom until after college, when I joined his JV football staff. There I saw what made him who he was by the values he instilled in his players and lived in his life…hard work, excellent execution, respect for teammates and opponents…and his pleasure in doing a job he loved well. Very few of us learn to live these lessons as he did!
I am blessed to have known him as a friend…
RIP Tom

Such a loss for Rome. I remember when I first met Coach Myz, at Stoles Elementary 5th grade gym class. In walk this “huge” guy, Coach Myz. Remember, we were 10- and 11-year old’s so Coach was a giant to us. He was our gym coach for two years, we all respected or feared him because of his booming command voice, more the latter, I am sure. It was several years before I saw Coach Myz again, it was when I joined RFA 74 – 75 Indoor Track Team as a long and triple jumper. Coach was very inspirational, tough on us, and letting anyone know he had high expectation for each individual. He continued to push me encouraging me that I could break the RFA in triple jump indoor record in ‘76. I tied the record at a meet, told him I can do better, and I wanted break the record for him, he looked at me and said “George, do it for you, if that is the best you can do, I’m fine with that”. At practices Coach barked with authority and respect to the guys on the team. I continued with Indoor Track in 75 – 76 and outdoor track in ‘75 and ‘76. The best I can say about Coach Myz is that we are taught and told to respect people in the position of authority, well many of us respected Coach Myz as a Coach, he also earned our respect as a person.
God Bless Coach Myz.

Debbie, I want to express my sincerest condolences to you and your family about Tom's passing. I knew him since we were at Transfiguration, then played sports together at RFA, and continued to meet during college years and even thereafter. I can't believe he's gone. I sent his obit on to other RFA teammates who don't keep up with the Sentinel. Tom was a great guy, a hard worker, and a dedicated athlete. I remember even when we were in college (him at Maryland and me at Penn State), when we'd meet back in Rome for the holidays, and share a beer at El Chico's, we'd talk about how he played against PSU. Good memories. My best wishes to you and your family as you continue your lives without "Grandpa Coach". We live in Chicago, so I'm sorry I won't be able to attend his wake or funeral.

Coach Myz,
My condolences to the Myzlinski family. Rome NY wouldn’t be the same without you!
I can’t put into words the impact you had on my life. You preached dedication, toughness and humility. More importantly, you demonstrated it every day. Grueling sled pushes, off season workouts that never seemed to end, and film session’s we all wished we could avoid. For me personally, Coach telling me after a game “you played well” made it all worth it.
I can’t forget to mention the fun we had. Whether it was us all getting a laugh at the jab coach gave one of our teammates…. or the countless hour’s the linemen spent imitating coach any chance we got (Joe Corley’s was the best).
Lastly… coach never stopped being a coach. My parents would tell me how he would help people at the Y with their workouts long after his retirement. Once a coach always a coach!
RIP Coach Myz!

When Coach Myz came back to Rome he started at Stokes Elementary where I was a student. As the years passed and I became a student at RFA, Coach Myz was my coach in track and field. We had great teams in indoor and outdoor track. While my name is Earl Peterson he would call me Pete. While Coach Myz was a great coach he was an even greater man. He believed in all us no matter how we placed in an event. He shaped all of us to become better young men. A legacy that carries in all of us who had the blessings of this man being a part of our lives. Some of my teammates from 1974 through 1976 who have already passed will surely be in Heaven to welcome him home. GOD BLESS.

We often hear about the important role that coaches play in our communities and the lives of children and young adults. They teach the value of teamwork and hard work. Coach was the finest coach there could be.
I had the chance to be coached by him at a unique time. In the Fall of 1991 RFA’s football program celebrated its 100th anniversary. We went undefeated and won the Section III Championship (with memorable contributions from Coach’s son Tim). I know for many of us who were a part of that team, it was the athletic experience of a lifetime.
Part of what made that experience so special was what it meant to others. All the coaches and supporters, former players, our families, friends and neighbors – it felt like the whole city - celebrated with us. We were part of a long and proud tradition. It was coach who introduced the linemen to that tradition for decades and taught us what it would take to play our small part in it.
The road to that season actually began for many of us in junior high. Coach was always on the lookout for a kid he could get into RFA’s weight room. Every day in the summer and the winter that weight room was open and Coach was there with workouts for us. He elevated simple movements like squats into an art form. But, while he taught us how to lift and condition, more importantly, he showed us what we were capable of - even if most of us were not great athletes, we could make a contribution to something great. In the years that followed I came to see Coach’s own selflessness and devotion to our success were the ultimate lesson he taught me. I realize now that, in the years leading up to that season, we spent several hundred days working with Coach in the off-season.
In season, Coach’s job was to teach us our jobs on the field. We were linemen. We wouldn’t score touchdowns, but we had a critical role to play. And once again, Coach was a masterful teacher, often demonstrating himself exactly what was to be done. He gave praise sparingly, but always when it was truly deserved. His deadly serious presence on the field was legendary when it came to coaching, which made his great sense of humor that much funnier when it came.
About 15 years ago at Kevin Lisewski’s wedding, I had the chance to thank Coach in person for all he did for me. I told him how the things he taught me guided me everywhere I’ve gone since, from college athletics to my work and personal life. Whenever the path seems long and difficult, I told him, I just put my head down and think about lessons woven through his coaching: work as hard as you can, put in the time, do your part to the best of your ability - and always watch your form.
The morning after I learned Coach had passed, I went to the gym and I did some heavy squats. My form was pretty good. I thanked Coach for that and so much more.
To Coach’s wife Debbie and his sons Tom and Tim, I want to express my heartfelt condolences.
Steve Viscelli
