Wayne C. Countryman Baltimore/Rome Wayne Countryman, age 60, a former Baltimore Sun copy editor, died Tuesday September 20, 2016, of complications from gastrointestinal disease at his Roland Park home. He was born April 10, 1956, in Rome, a son of Richard P. and Marilyn Wendt Countryman, and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1974, and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and political science in 1978 from George Washington University. Wayne began his career working for the Bristol Herald Courier in Bristol, VA. From 1984 to 1989, he was a city desk copy editor for the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He then joined the staff of the Roanoke Times in Roanoke, VA., as a copy editor, and worked there until joining the staff of the Baltimore Sun in 1998. His copy editing duties at The Sun included working on the paper's metropolitan and real estate sections. In 2004, he was named senior editor of AmericanStyle and NICHE magazines, both Baltimore publications. From 2008 to 2012, he was an assistant editor at the Daily Record, editing legal coverage, special sections, freelance and wire copy for print and the website and writing blog posts. He worked as an associate editor of the Baltimore Business Journal from 2012 to 2013. He then became a freelance editor, writer, proofreader and researcher for publications and firms, including the Congressional Quarterly, Bmoremedia.com, Baltimore City Paper and Hogan Lovells US LLP, a Baltimore law firm. At the time of his death, Wayne was working as a copy editor for the Daily Beast. Wayne enjoyed music of all types, as well as photography, travel and reading. He is survived by his mother, Marilyn of Rome; two sisters and brothers in law, Bonita and Robert Katsur of Wasilla, AK, and Sheila and Donald Thompson of Solvang, CA; a brother and sister in law, Gregg and Mary Countryman of Indian Trail, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Richard P. Countryman. The funeral service will be held Monday at 6:00 PM, at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Monday 4 to 6 PM, prior to the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
