Dear Mary Anne and family, I was so sorry to read of Merritt's passing. I have many fond memories of him when we would meet in town or in our store. One especially, of the day he actually delivered a baby in the store when another customer went into labor. Bless you all and his memory. Karen and Clark Newton

I had the pleasure of working with Merritt for many years at Rome Hospital and the Griffiss Surgery Center. There was no person more caring and compassionate than Merritt. Whenever I arrived in the morning and saw that he was with my patients I could relax knowing that they were receiving the best care. His tender approach soothed even the most nervous patient. Even in the most stressful situations he maintained a calm presence that was truly one of a kind. We miss him.

There are so many memories, but there is one story that stands out from the rest.
The summer of '72 the Bouchers hosted a cookout and Merritt was in charge of the grill. Having some difficulty lighting the charcoal, in lieu of starter fluid, Merritt decided that gasoline would do the trick. The flames reached some 20-30 feet into the air and I recall some scorched leaves in nearby trees!
The flames died down, the hot dogs and hamburgers were cooked, but it was Merritt who got the charcoal and the party started!

It's been many, many years since I've seen Merritt. We were friends as young 20 something adults and my memories of him then was how how much he enjoyed his life especially with his wife Maryann. One of my favorite memories with him was when me and Robbie Spataro called out sick to our jobs went to Merritt's place and kidnap him ( with Maryann's permission). The three of us went to the Jersey Shore. Being a Nurse you would think he knew better but no he pulls out a bottle of baby oil and covers himself with it. We spent all day on the beach. Well you can imagine what happens, he was red as a lobster. Merritt didn't care about his severe sun burn, he was just so happy to have that spontaneous day with us. My deepest condolences to you Maryann and all of your family. Rest In Peace Merritt and thank you for that memory and many others.

John Schilling was an old friend of Merritt's. He like, Merritt, left us all too soon, a few years ago. John and Merritt were both Sea Scouts and members of a band called Peristalsis. I like to think of Merritt and John rockin' away up in heaven, playing "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," with John on drums and Merritt on bass guitar. Like our dad, Merritt had a natural ear for music and was a talented vocalist. Rock on, Merritt!
