Raymond “Ray” Malcolm Stone, age 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the Abraham House of Rome, with the love of his life of 32 years, Sunshine, by his side, after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Ray was born in Luton, (Bedfordshire) England on March 16, 1942, to the late Charles and Anne Lyons Stone. At the age of 16, he joined the British Merchant Navy for seven years. He worked on the original Queen Mary in 1960 and the original Queen Elizabeth in 1963. Ray worked on many cruise lines: The Princess Cruise Lines and The Cunard Cruise Lines just to name a few. He worked at several casinos in London including A PAIR OF SHOES casino where he said “a lot of movie stars would come in and play, and Sophia Loren was just one example.”
Ray moved to the US and eventually settled in Rome, NY. He was one of the original people to help open the Turning Stone Casino and worked as an assistant shift manager there. He enjoyed meeting people and chatting with them and telling his past stories of his experiences in life. He would always be the first person to give someone a ride or help them with whatever they needed. One of his favorite pastimes was to food shop which he would do almost every day. He would go to every supermarket in town or the next town over.
He enjoyed cooking, eating, and horse racing. He was an avid soccer fan and followed the Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Every morning, he could be found with several of his friends enjoying a coffee and their friendship.
